Bitter Orange essential oil is obtained from the peel of orange fruit by cold pressing and is part of the botanical family Rutaceae. It is a tree native to tropical parts of Asia and Africa, but is also found in areas such as Italy, Spain, Morocco, the Caribbean, South America and India. As its name suggests, Bitter Orange essential oil has a bitter aroma, being a mixture between the sweet aroma of Sweet Orange and the bitter aroma of Grapefruit oil. Since ancient times, pressed bitter oranges have been used for their therapeutic, healing benefits. Also known as Narange in Sanskrit, bitter orange has been used in alternative Ayurvedic medicine to treat gout, gastrointestinal problems, loss of appetite, anxiety or digestive disorders.
Top note
Its bitter aroma is a synergy between the sweet and exotic tones of Sweet Orange essential oil and the slightly floral bitter shades of Grapefruit oil. It is a much more aromatic scent than that of Sweet Orange oil, with fruity and sweet aromas, complemented by tropical citrus tones full of freshness.
